EP 225: A Return to Ancient Awe of the Divine through Illuminated Texts with Joel Trumbo

The last time I was out of the country was way back in 2008. On a whim, I booked a trip to Ireland, wanting to take a few weeks to explore the land where most of my ancestry hails from. From visiting cathedrals to drinking beer in peat-scented pubs, it was an amazing trip. But one of the most impactful parts was visiting Trinity College in Dublin and seeing the Book of Kells in person.

I’ve come to learn that the unique and intricate styling of the text is called “illumination” and is quite mesmerizing:

I also recently learned of a project that Catholic/husband/father/military veteran/book binder Joel Trumbo is working on that is just fascinating: An entire illuminated version of the four Gospels. While smaller texts in this style are still being created in our modern times, a complete collection of the Gospels done in this style is something that hasn’t been done in a very, very, very long time.

In this episode of The Catholic Mama podcast, Joel joins me to discuss his project journey, the history of illumination, and how this intricate style of art/handwriting points to the majesty of God.
