Some of my earliest memories are of my parents’ stories – how they met, their wedding day, the vacations they went on, the comically disastrous camping trips. These stories, though not my own, connected me to my parents in the time before I was born, a time when our family as it is was first being formed.
As a mother, I pass on some of those stories to my children. I enjoy hearing my parents, now “Grandma” and “Grandpa,” tell them again. Even the smallest, most seemingly insignificant stories, hold meaning, rooting my children and myself to our family tree.
Celeste Behe, wife of Dr. Michael Behe (who came on The Catholic Mama podcast to discuss how to talk to your kids about evolution), has a talent for storytelling, recounting the stories of her youth in the Bronx, looking back with an eye for weaving into them catechesis of our Catholic faith.
Recently, Celeste joined me on the podcast to talk about how important generational stories are to laying lasting foundations for our families and she tells some of her own stories, too. It was a lovely conversation, and I think you’ll enjoy it.
